Band Camp was a Blast!

Those of you familiar with "Remember the Titans" may be able to relate to the family atmosphere that can be achieved when teenagers are brought together to achieve a common goal. And though the band did not have to deal with the adversity present in "Remember the Titans," they did get away from their normal lives and regular routines to get to know one another, and to create a show that the Borgia community will be proud of!

Our band director, Sue Bright, did an amazing job mixing together the hard work of the week with time for the students to get to know one another. Just when the band needed a break, she sat the kids down, shared a little from the Bible, and then reminded the students the importance of being a team...and of being a family.

This year, nearly half the members of the band are new. A mix of freshmen, a couple transfer students, and a couple returning students who are new to band combined with the returnees this week for the first time. However, by the end of the first day, you would have thought they had been working together for years.

In "Remember the Titans," the coach made a big deal out of the fact that they would do "three-a-day" practices until they got to know each other. I don't know how many hours that amounted to, but our band practiced nearly 14 hours each of the days they were at camp...and Mrs. Bright wasn't doing it because the students refused to get to know each other. They did that without being asked.

Also without being asked, these students demonstrated how polite the Borgia students could be. When they were tired and soaked with sweat, the parents on hand - and there were quite a few - rewarded them with a quick swig of water. Despite the fact that it was only a little relief, they never hesitated to say thank you.

While I can't do justice to the band's week at camp and give it a "Remember the Titans" quality movie, I did use iMovie to put together a trailer. I hope you will view it here: http://m.youtube.com/?reload=7&rdm=02je#/watch?v=4DQiAJoNb9U
